Hello. In this lab we learned about density. What we had to do is see if we can make layers of different colors instead of them all mixing together.
Let me tell you some background information. First, stratification. Stratification is a naturally occurring phenomenon that is important to the circulation of the oceans. Water density is influenced by temperature and salinity. The separation between warm and cold water is called the thermocline.
Storms in the winter create turbulent mixing between the cold and warm water together. Mixing is critical for ecosystems because it brings nutrients to the surface of the water and oxygen deeper in the water. During springtime, the waters stratify. This traps phytoplankton near the surface of the water, resulting in it bringing nutrients.
Here are the materials you will need to complete lab:
After doing this experiment and trying to be successful, me and my amigo did not succeed. The food coloring all mixed together and turned blue. Doing this lab you will need to be very slow when pouring the food colored water into the beaker.

Here are the materials you will need to complete lab:
- 2 250 ML beakers, 1 500 ML beaker
- Electric scale
- stirring rod (glass rod)
- Salt, water samples(warm and cold)
- Food coloring (yellow and blue)
- Camera to take pictures :)
